Doctoral Researcher (m/w/d)
in Artificial Intelligence for Engineering-Related Research Data Management
(TV-L E 13, 100%, Location: Clausthal-Zellerfeld)
The position is for the duration of three years in full-time. Part time is negotiable.
At the Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISSE), we are looking for a new member for our ML4E research group, who explores the potential of AI technologies, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), in research and research data management. Our goal is to apply and further develop these technologies within the scope of the national research data infrastructure project (NFDI)[1].
In this position, you will be closely involved in developing an AI-based Research Software Engineering Assistant as part of the NFDI project.
Another focus of your work will be on our research platform, Betty's ReSearch Engine, where you will contribute to its further development and the integration of AI components. You will work in close collaboration with our project partners and bring your expertise to various projects.
In this role, you will also have the opportunity to work on your dissertation.

Your tasks will be:
- Conducting research on approaches for using AI (especially language models) to support engineers and engineering science, in collaboration with our ML4E team
- Designing, training, evaluating, and implementing prototypes of these approaches
- Publishing your results at national and international conferences
- Assisting in the preparation of lectures, supervising exercises, and supporting students
Your profile:
- Strong academic degree (Master's or Diplom) in Computer Science, Business Informatics, Mathematics, or a related field, with an interest in scientific work as part of a Ph.D.
- Relevant experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence, particularly in Natural Language Processing
- Experience in software development
- Independent, structured working style and quick comprehension, with the ability to rapidly understand new concepts
- Strong programming skills and experience with ML libraries (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow)
- Excellent German language skills, both spoken and written (C1)
- Good English language skills, both spoken and written
Desired knowledge in the following areas:
- Experience in software engineering and software architectures
- Experience with common software development tools, such as Git, continuous integration, and issue tracking
- Experience in web development and web technologies (REST, JavaScript, ...)

Remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L). At the end of the year, the TV-L provides for a special annual payment. In addition, we offer a separate supplementary pension in the form of a company pension (VBL).
